What this checker looks at

  • General liability each-occurrence and aggregate limits, additional insured and waiver of subrogation.
  • Auto liability combined single limit.
  • Umbrella / excess limits — and whether an umbrella can make up a shortfall.
  • Workers’ compensation presence and employers’ liability limits.
  • Certificate holder name and every required policy’s expiration date, with a warning when one lapses within 30 days.

Where to find each value

Every value comes from the certificate’s coverage table. If you’re not sure which box is which, open the annotated certificate of insurance sample next to this page.

FAQ

Common questions.

  1. 01

How do I check a certificate of insurance?

Compare each policy on the certificate with your contract: general liability, auto, umbrella and workers’ comp limits; whether you’re shown as additional insured and with a waiver of subrogation; the certificate holder name; and every policy’s expiration date.

  2. 02

What makes a certificate of insurance non-compliant?

Common problems: a required policy is missing, a limit is below what your contract requires, a policy has expired, the additional insured or waiver box isn’t marked, or the insured or holder name is wrong.

  3. 03

Can an umbrella policy make up for low general liability limits?

Often, if your contract allows it. For example, $500,000 GL plus a $1,000,000 umbrella may satisfy a $1,000,000 requirement. The checker flags this as a note rather than a failure; switch the behaviour off if your contract doesn’t allow it.

  4. 04

Is my certificate data uploaded anywhere?

No. This free checker runs entirely in your browser — nothing you type is sent to our servers.

  5. 05

Can this read the PDF for me?

The free checker uses the values you enter. Certy reads uploaded PDFs and photos automatically with AI, runs the same checks, and reminds your subs before anything expires.
