Employers Liability Limits on an ACORD 25
Read all three employers liability amounts, not just the first number. Each accident, disease for each employee and disease for the policy period address different limits. Compare every required field with the contract and resolve unclear evidence with the broker.
What the fields mean
The North Carolina Rating Bureau’s policy guide describes separate accident and disease limits. Its rating explanation explains the disease employee limit and the disease policy aggregate. Use those descriptions to understand the categories; do not treat the bureau’s state-specific standard amounts as a national contractual minimum.
| Field | Review question |
|---|---|
| Each accident | What amount applies to bodily injury from a single accident? |
| Disease, each employee | What amount applies to disease injury to one employee? |
| Disease, policy limit | What aggregate amount applies to disease injury during the policy term? |
A contract may specify different values. Preserve the labels when entering figures into a spreadsheet so the two disease limits do not get transposed.
A five-step limit check
- Copy the contract’s three requested amounts into your requirements record.
- Match the certificate’s employer and policy number with the vendor being hired.
- Record all three shown amounts and their labels, plus the effective and expiration dates.
- Identify missing or lower limits as a specific deficiency rather than simply saying workers comp failed.
- If the vendor proposes umbrella support, obtain broker confirmation of the relevant underlying coverage, attachment requirements and policy terms before crediting it.
A certificate summarizes evidence; it does not expand coverage. The workers compensation versus employers liability guide explains why a statutory benefits entry is a separate question.
Example: one million is not enough information
A hypothetical contract asks for one million dollars in each of the three employers liability fields. The certificate shows one million each accident, five hundred thousand disease per employee and one million disease policy limit. Only the disease-per-employee field falls below this hypothetical requirement. The reviewer sends a deficiency email identifying that exact field, then reviews the replacement evidence when it arrives. These numbers illustrate contract comparison, not a legal minimum or coverage recommendation.
When the limits are not on the same document
A state-fund certificate may answer the statutory coverage question while separate evidence addresses employers liability. Keep both records linked to the vendor and work period. The COI checker can help organize entered policy fields, but unresolved policy applicability still needs human confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
What are the three employers liability limits?
The usual categories are bodily injury by accident for each accident, bodily injury by disease for each employee, and bodily injury by disease for the policy period.
Does a statutory workers compensation entry mean unlimited employers liability?
No. Statutory benefits and employers liability limits are different checks. Obtain the applicable employers liability evidence.
