How to Review Umbrella Coverage Against Contract Requirements
Do not add the umbrella number to every other limit automatically. Identify the requirement, then review whether the umbrella or excess policy applies to the relevant underlying coverage, insured parties, operations and dates.
Read the requirement first
The agreement may require a specific primary limit, permit a combination of primary and excess limits, or specify separate umbrella evidence. Record the actual wording and ask the authorized reviewer to resolve ambiguity before deciding that excess coverage can satisfy a shortfall.
The certificate is a summary. New York OGS insurance terminology guidance helps distinguish insurance concepts, but the policy and agreement determine the detailed review.
Check dates independently
An expired umbrella policy should not be used as current evidence to support another policy’s limit. A future effective date also leaves a present-period question. Compare both primary and excess periods with the work dates and use the date gap checker for evidence continuity.
Different renewal dates are common in a vendor file. Track them separately rather than assigning the latest date on the certificate to the entire program.
Confirm applicability
Ask for the relevant underlying policy schedule and terms needed by the reviewer. Verify the coverage type and policy period being supported. Do not assume that an umbrella follows every primary policy, has identical exclusions or extends every additional insured or waiver provision.
A hypothetical shortfall
A contract permits primary-plus-excess evidence for a GL requirement. The certificate shows a lower primary limit and an umbrella policy, but the umbrella expired before the current work period. The reviewer requests current applicable evidence rather than adding the two printed numbers together.
Preserve the review decision
Record the specific requirement, evidence examined, unresolved scope questions and any approved exception. Keep endorsement and underlying-schedule documents with the certificate. If the umbrella renews or the primary insurer changes, revisit the assumptions rather than carrying the earlier conclusion forward.
Certy includes a setting allowing umbrella limits to support selected baseline checks. That arithmetic setting does not itself establish follow-form terms, attachment, exclusions or claim coverage. Review the actual documents and retain the specialist decision. Use the COI review checklist to make these limits visible to the next reviewer.
Frequently asked questions
Can I always add GL and umbrella limits together?
No. Check the agreement and relevant excess policy terms, including dates, underlying coverage and scope.
Does a current GL policy make an expired umbrella usable?
No. Review the umbrella period independently before relying on it as current supporting evidence.
