How to Track Pollution Liability Endorsements
Track pollution evidence as its own review task. The word “pollution” on a certificate does not establish the covered contaminants, operations, transport obligations or endorsement conditions your agreement requires.
Define the requirement precisely
Record the vendor, project, contaminants, operations, locations and contractual requirement. Identify whether the work includes transport, disposal, professional assessment or lower-tier contractors. Have the broker or specialist reviewer identify the documents needed to assess those duties.
Create a register with policy number, period, relevant form or endorsement title, edition, reviewer, result and open question. Keep the underlying evidence linked rather than recording only a yes/no field.
Review dates beyond the expiration field
Ask the qualified reviewer which retroactive dates, claims-made conditions, reporting requirements or other timing provisions matter for the actual policy. Do not interpret these from a generic certificate. Track a specialty policy’s renewal separately from GL and workers comp.
A hypothetical remediation vendor submits current pollution evidence but no document addressing a required transport operation. The reviewer records the missing scope and asks for the applicable wording, rather than approving the file because the policy label and date look correct.
Route specialist questions
Keep contaminant restrictions, site conditions and policy exclusions visible to the reviewer. A certificate extraction tool can transcribe a field without interpreting those terms. Preserve the answer and policy document used for the decision so a later reviewer can understand the basis.
The environmental remediation guide and broker request checklist help prepare the questions.
Test software against a real document set
Evaluate whether the product stores endorsement versions, checks the requirement you actually use, records uncertainty and routes exceptions to a person. Demonstrate a missing endorsement, a renewal with changed wording and a specialty policy on a different renewal date.
Public vendor materials distinguish policy extraction from deeper review. For example, BCS documents several review tiers. Its advertised feature levels should be checked against a written proposal. Read the BCS vs CertFocus comparison for a neutral demonstration checklist, not an untested coverage verdict.
Know Certy’s current boundary
Certy is a COI tracking product. It extracts certificate fields and checks a shared account baseline; it does not currently perform a full pollution endorsement interpretation workflow. Keep specialist evidence and decisions in the process or platform that supports your requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is a pollution certificate enough to review an endorsement requirement?
Not necessarily. Obtain the policy or endorsement documents needed for the actual contaminant, operation and contractual scope.
Does Certy automatically interpret pollution endorsements?
No. Its current certificate extraction and baseline checks should not be described as a full specialty endorsement review.
