Environmental Remediation subcontractor insurance requirements
Define the contaminants, site conditions, remediation method and waste chain. A certificate alone rarely answers the specific wording questions in a pollution requirement.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Contaminant scope
Policies and endorsements can address different substances and operations.
Waste chain
Transport, temporary storage and disposal responsibilities need clear ownership.
Reporting terms
Claims-made or reporting conditions can matter to later disputes.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Which policy and endorsement address the named contaminants and remediation operations?
- How do retroactive dates and reporting conditions relate to the work period?
- Are transportation and non-owned disposal-site obligations addressed where required?
Documents to collect
- GL, auto and workers comp evidence
- Relevant pollution policy schedule, endorsements and excerpts
- Insurance records for transporters, consultants and disposal-related contractors as required
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A contractor uploads a pollution certificate, but the required waste-transport endorsement is missing. The reviewer requests the actual document and records the uncertainty instead of accepting the coverage label alone.
Renewals and scope changes
Track pollution evidence separately from GL renewals, and retain policy-period records and reporting questions for specialist review.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
Prepare the request
- Copy the certificate request email
