Crane and Rigging subcontractor insurance requirements
Identify crane ownership, operator, rigging design, lift planning and care of lifted property. Bare rental and operated lifting services create different contractual responsibilities.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Lifted property
Damage to the item being moved may need separate consideration.
Surrounding property
A lift can affect adjacent buildings and public areas.
Operator control
Responsibility differs when equipment is rented without an operator.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Is this bare rental or an operated service, and who controls the lift?
- What evidence addresses rigging, lifted property and required professional planning?
- Are the actual crane, work radius and subcontracted riggers within the agreed scope?
Documents to collect
- GL, auto and workers comp evidence
- Relevant rigging, equipment and professional evidence required by the contract
- Required additional insured and waiver documentation
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A contractor rents a crane without an operator but submits the rental company’s certificate as the entire lifting file. The GC identifies the operator and lift-control responsibilities and requests the missing evidence.
Renewals and scope changes
Review equipment, operator and lift-plan changes separately from annual policy renewals.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
