Plumbing subcontractor insurance requirements

Describe service calls, new installation, gas work, excavation and any engineering responsibility. The most useful review connects the certificate to the actual plumbing operation and occupied premises.

Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.

Scope details that change the review

Water escape

A failed connection can affect several floors and tenant spaces.

Gas and heat

Gas connections and soldering introduce different work-method questions.

Below-grade work

Trenching can add utility and excavation exposures.

Questions for the contractor and agent

  1. Are gas, excavation and hot-work operations within the policy scope for this job?
  2. Does the required completed operations evidence apply to the installed work?
  3. Who is responsible for lower-tier excavation or specialty welding crews?

Documents to collect

Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.

A hypothetical review

A plumbing contractor supplies a standard service certificate for a project that also relocates a buried gas line. The reviewer requests the expanded scope and relevant terms before applying the earlier approval to the new work.

Renewals and scope changes

Track the policies independently and reopen the review when gas, excavation or a new subcontractor is added.

Choosing limits

These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
