Snow Removal subcontractor insurance requirements
Specify plowing, shoveling, de-icing, hauling and responsibility for monitoring conditions. The contract should identify sites and response duties clearly.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Slip and fall
Conditions can change between service visits and after refreezing.
Vehicle damage
Plows and loaders operate close to curbs, parked cars and pedestrians.
Lower-tier routes
A prime vendor may assign routes to independent drivers.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Does the insurance scope include snow and ice operations for these properties?
- How are owned, hired and subcontracted vehicles handled under the agreement?
- Who retains site-service logs and lower-tier insurance evidence?
Documents to collect
- GL, auto and workers comp evidence
- Required additional insured and waiver documents
- Evidence for subcontracted route operators where your agreement requires it
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A landscaping company adds winter services using independent plow operators. The manager requests snow-operation and lower-tier evidence rather than treating the summer COI as a complete winter review.
Renewals and scope changes
Review evidence before the season and again when routes or subcontracted operators change.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
Prepare the request
- Copy the certificate request email
- Download the COI review checklist
- Check workers’ comp requirements by state
