Solar Installation subcontractor insurance requirements
Separate roof work, electrical connection, design and ongoing monitoring. Identify whether installation affects an existing roof warranty or includes energy-performance commitments.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Roof penetrations
Installation can create later water-intrusion disputes.
Electrical systems
Connections can affect fire risk and building operations.
Design promises
Layout, output estimates and performance duties may need professional review.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Does the policy scope include both roofing-related and electrical operations?
- Who carries responsibility for engineering and performance commitments?
- Are roof, height, residential or subcontracted-work restrictions relevant?
Documents to collect
- GL, auto and workers comp evidence
- Required completed operations and additional insured endorsements
- Relevant design/professional and lower-tier contractor evidence
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A solar installer subcontracts roof attachments and electrical connections to separate businesses. The owner reviews the allocated duties and required evidence for each instead of relying only on the installer’s COI.
Renewals and scope changes
Review added design or monitoring duties and keep records of the installation-period evidence.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
