Welding subcontractor insurance requirements
Specify shop fabrication or on-site work, hot-work methods, structural use and any pressure systems. The same vendor can perform materially different operations under different work orders.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Fire
Heat and sparks can affect concealed spaces and nearby operations.
Structural defects
Failed welds may create completed-work disputes.
Special systems
Tanks, pipes or confined locations can change the risk discussion.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Does the policy scope include the actual hot-work method and location?
- Are structural, pressure-system or confined-space tasks included?
- Who supplies inspection, testing and any engineering certification?
Documents to collect
- GL and workers comp evidence
- Required completed operations and additional insured documents
- Relevant inspection or professional-service evidence when required
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A shop fabricator is asked to perform on-site hot work inside an occupied warehouse. The reviewer obtains location- and method-specific evidence before extending the shop-only approval.
Renewals and scope changes
Review changes between shop and site work, plus added structural or pressure-system duties.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
