Asbestos Abatement subcontractor insurance requirements
Review inspection, removal, containment, transport and disposal roles explicitly. Insurance evidence and licensing or accreditation serve different purposes and both may need verification.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Fiber release
A failure of containment can affect occupied areas and neighboring property.
Transport and disposal
Responsibility can continue beyond removal from the premises.
Survey responsibility
Inspection or design work may create professional-service questions.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Does the relevant pollution policy specifically address the asbestos operations being contracted?
- What retroactive date, reporting conditions and exclusions require specialist review?
- Who is responsible for transport, disposal and independent clearance testing?
Documents to collect
- GL and workers comp evidence
- Relevant asbestos/pollution policy and endorsement evidence
- Required licensing, accreditation and separate transport or testing records
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
An abatement vendor submits only a GL certificate. The reviewer requests the contract-required specialty evidence and clarifies survey, disposal and testing responsibilities before marking the file complete.
Renewals and scope changes
Track specialty policy dates and review reporting conditions with the broker; retain evidence for the work period.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
Prepare the request
- Copy the certificate request email
- Download the COI review checklist
