Masonry subcontractor insurance requirements
Identify structural masonry, veneer, restoration, cutting and scaffold arrangements. Access, silica-producing work and building occupancy should be visible in the scope record.
Start with your agreement, the work scope and the applicable state workers’ comp rules. Collect current policy evidence and the endorsements your agreement requires. A certificate summarizes information; it does not resolve every exclusion or condition.
Scope details that change the review
Falling materials
Masonry operations can affect pedestrians and neighboring property.
Dust
Cutting and grinding can create exposures beyond the immediate work area.
Structural performance
Load-bearing work and façade attachment raise completed-work questions.
Questions for the contractor and agent
- Does the scope include structural masonry or façade restoration at height?
- Who supplies, erects and insures the scaffold system?
- Are relevant dust or silica restrictions identified in the broker review?
Documents to collect
- GL and workers comp evidence
- Required completed operations and additional insured documents
- Separate scaffold contractor evidence when applicable
Compare policy dates and limits against the signed requirements. Check the actual endorsement wording when the requirement depends on insured status, a waiver or the scope of operations. Keep unknown items pending and record the reviewer responsible for resolving them.
A hypothetical review
A contractor hired for small repairs is asked to stabilize a multi-story façade. The reviewer updates the scope and access plan before reusing the small-repair approval.
Renewals and scope changes
Check scaffold changes, structural additions and renewals across phased restoration work.
Choosing limits
These review questions do not establish a universal legal minimum for this trade. Owner contracts, project size, operations and applicable licensing rules can change what is required. Use the requirements generator for an illustrative starting schedule, then have the authorized risk owner and broker approve the actual requirements.
